Match Reports

C reds wrestle a win against Banks Raptors – 2-1

Knowing that the opposition was on the same points as us we knew we had to win this game.  Things didn’t start out well with our two speedy forwards Shayla (not well) not playing and Emma Rowe (not back from the movies yet) there at the beginning of the game.

It was a hot day ( we are not used to it at the moment) and everyone felt it. Tammie padded up for us for the first time this season and even with problems with size of helmut was a great help to us. The rest of the team struggled with the heat and with only one real sub it was desperate by the end of the game.

The outstanding effort was put in by Adele who scored both our goals and Emily Meginess playing inner showed us some of her speed getting to run away passes to our advantage. Dani ( even though she started tired) put in a stirling effort at half and on the wing.  Of course everyone else put in a great effort and we were rewarded with the win.  Well done team!!

Tahs U10 Boys win by another large margin, 20-0

This match report has to begin with acknowledgement of the courage and perseverance of the Pints players who continue to play despite the mounting goal difference.

Tahs demonstrated thoughtful play by passing and moving into open areas on the field. Also, at least one of the goals was a fine example of teamwork and playing to our strengths when a 16 yard hit was passed up the field and around the opposition, resulting in a goal.

Congratulations on your win and for being gracious winners.

Z. Rakkas – 12, H. Wiltshire – 6, P. Wiltshire – 2.

C Reds v St Marys Gold lost 3-2

Thinking we were going to be without Adele and Vicki and possibly Ollie ( taken for higher duties in A and B Grade) I recruited quickly to fill the gaps and we welcomed Emily Meginess back to the team and Chris Dahlin as our high impact casual. As it turned out we only lost Vicki so we had a full strength team.

We started the game well being 1 –nil up at half time and 2-0 for part of the second half. Carol had a great game showing her tenacity for the whole 70 minutes and being rewarded with both of our goals. Chris and Shayla both created chances on the forward line with the second goal scored off a beautifully executed short corner in which Shayla was and integral part. Alison Clarke provided some great communication from the back line.

St Mary’s were lucky to score their equaliser from a penalty stroke with 12 minutes to go. However Sam did a sterling job in the nets. We only lost the game in the last few minutes with a slight lapse in concentration. The whole team put in a great effort and I think gave St Marys a scare.  Next time we will beat them!!!

Well done girls.

Women's B Round 4 & 5

Women’s B Round 4 vs St Mary’s

Today’s game saw the team down a few players and some C graders stepped up the mark, some on last minute SOS calls. A solid game from the team produced a majority of the attack with the girls occupying over 80% of the possession. This strong attack couldn’t produce more than two goals. The pressuring attack left us stranded twice with two fast break goals scored by Saints to keep the scores level.

Women’s B Round 5 vs NUT’s

Today’s game was the first of the weekend game for the team. This saw an array of new and interesting challenges with the A’s playing soon after ours. This left us without some players and a Centre Half. Another issue was playing in the heat of the day.

NUT’s is one of the strongest opponents in the competition and a tough game was expected. The girls raced out to a 3-0 lead with goals from Kelly and Tammie. As well as a spectator diving goal from C grader fill in Vicki. NUT’s responded with a goal, however too much work was needed for NUT’s and the teams defence was too hard for them to break down. The game was secured in the second half with Tammie coring a double. The team won 4-1, well done to remain undefeated after 5 rounds. Next week’s challenge is to beat Banks after a 3-3 draw last time.

B Men

The B Grade Men went down 0-2 to NUTS in a well fought game that showed the continuing improvement of this team. We absorbed a lot of pressure particularly in the first half but remained structured and focused, enabling us to win some corners and bring some attack back to NUTS.  Simon George played an excellent game in goals and Aaron Kellett did a lot of hard running to consistently make leads for the ball coming out of defence, but it was good to see the focus did not waver from any of the players.  Also great to see is the increased confidence and improvement in the younger contingent of players we are bringing through this team.

C Reds triumph over Easts 6 -2

After watching C Whites win their game 1-0 in the last 5 seconds of their game we were inspired to go out there and sock it to the opposition and that is what we did.

It was hot hot hot and faces were getting pretty red.  Adele, Ollie and Vicki didn’t seem the worse for wear after playing B Grade yesterday and kept it going very well in the centre. Carol continues to be our utility player being solid in any position she is placed in and Clarky, Heather and Vicki had the backline sorted. Sam made some good saves and we will miss her when she leaves in June.

We had some great passing passages of play leading to our goals only one being achieved from a short corner beautifully taken and well practiced.

Every one did very well as some were played in positions they have never played before and it was a hot day. The real star of the day however was Shayla who really showed us what she has got by scoring a 3 goals capitalising on her skills and speed. She was well supported by Angela and Emma who were unfortunately not rewarded with goals of their own. All in all an excellent effort

Keep it up girls.

A Grde Women defeat NUTS 3-0

WA defeated NUTS 3-0
Goals - Fibi 2, Julie 1
Best - Fibi, Tayla, Gabi, Josie
A rather flat and unexciting game for the 1st half saw Tahs with plenty of attack but not alot of outcomes in the circle.  In the 2nd half we had plenty of the ball again, and we had a bit more urgency in our game which was good to see.  However, the tempo and intensity at which we play must be at a higher level consistently if we are to be serious contenders for the flag again this year.  With only 1 game in the next 5 weeks, its important everyone is doing some extra fitness work so that we are still at a reasonable level come mid June.

UN10 Boys Draw with Uni Tigers

U10 Tahs Boys Draw with NUTS 4-4

Well done lads for drawing with a full team which had a number of subs on the bench. This was a hard fought game during a sultry morning. There wasn't much fun in this game however, there was a lot of courage, perseverance and sharing of the ball within the Tahs Team. These qualities meant that the NUTS players were on the back-foot  as your passing made them run and persistence in tackling gave you more possession. Although you were five on the field, the communication and teamwork that you are developing is making you strong competition. You can all be proud of the result. I hope that there is more fun in the next game for you lads. Goal scorers: Z.Rakkas and H.Wiltshire

UN16 Girls Defeat Uni Tigers

U16 Girls vs Nightlcliff University Tigers

With the little numbers we did get (7 players in total) we managed to take out the Uni team with a win,  even with their many substitutions on the bench. As usual we had Clair in goals and Zoe at Fullback with both Louise and Michelle working hard as our Midfielder's and our goal scoring guru Shayla Barba upfront with the help of the ever improving Katelyn! Not much can be said strategically as we had many of the girls filling in not only one position but 2 or 3 and were still running around with 5 minutes left on the clock so as a coach i can not complain! Already with Round 5 down we are proving to be major contenders for this years grand final and so each week our wonderful manager Marie is trying to scrounge up as many players as we possibly can to hopefully soon be fielding a full team every week but so far, so good! Onto Round 6!

U8 Red Dragons Lost to Redbacks 3-0 - Match report

Well done everyone! The score didn't reflect the level of skill and teamwork that you played with.

Being out numbered by the opposition also contributed to the Dragons strong defense coming into play. I lost count of how many goals Khaden stopped.

There was was skilled dribbling by Jo-Jo, and Ellie was outstanding in communicating her intended moves to the Team. Dayna pushed out accurate frees. While both Sammie and Danielle tackled well.

Best of all, we all had fun and enjoyed our Icey-Poles at the end.

I'm looking forward to seeing each of play more.

U10 Tahs - Defeated BM Banks by a large margin

Well I lost count of how many goals Zach scored after 5; a stunning performance. Both Huw and Patrick scored a goal each through teamwork. Eloy put a lot of effort into a lot of running on a very humid morning, well done. Although Nic spent much of the game on the bench due injury, he got back into the game and intercepted the play showing some of his potential.

Looking forward to Team training next week guys.

C Reds v Commerce won 3-0 10.4.011

The team ran on without me as my knee played up in the warm up run ( do you think someone is trying to tell me something) however that didn’t phase them.  In fact they did very well without me. The old combination of Carol at centre half and Ollie and Adele at inner worked very well.  We had a lot of passing play and a great one- two between Carol and Adele which led to a goal.

Shayla’s and Emma’s speed up front has certainly kept the opposition on their toes.  We need to keep leading into space and making clean traps of the ball. Emma finishing off a great team lead up to the first goal.

Alison Clark and Vicki worked well in the back line (maybe I am out of a job).

Hopefully we will be able to train soon so we can get back to the basics as I feel we did let ourselves down a little on the basics. Otherwise well done girls

Tahs U10 Boys defeat East Darwin 8 -0

The second game of the season was another example skill and teamwork. Captain Zach Rakkas led in goal scoring with strong support for the Team, especially from Huw and Patrick Wiltshire. East Darwin’s stronger defence during the second half made the boys think more, work harder and communicate better, especially Nicolas Brodi and Eloy Mason. This created more goal scoring opportunities. Keep up your inclusive teamwork and your healthy, happy approach to the game. Congratulations on a game well played.

Waratahs 2011 U/8 teams

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to the U/8’s.  My philosophy with the U/8’s is for the children to enjoy the experience of playing hockey, and to have a great time and to enjoy themselves.

Trainings will only be for ¾ hour.  While at times you may wonder what the activities I do relate to hockey, but believe me they do, and I am trying to give the children a great experience of hockey.

After Easter our trainings will be on Tuesday 5.30-6.30 pm.  Please look on the noticeboard each training night for which turf we have been allocated that week.

Please feel free to contact me by email or mobile phone anytime.  I sometimes travel away with work, and may not be available for trainings or games, but I will ensure I have a suitable replacement. I will be away on Sunday 17 April, Di Wiltshire and Audrey Hill  will be coaching. Both teams play at 8.30am.

Once both turfs are operating, our games will be on Saturday mornings, please ensure you arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of the game time.

The following are which teams the children have been placed in.  Again, if you would like them in another team please let me know.

Mens C Grade vs Banks

Lost: 3 - 2

Goal Scorers: Graham Jones, Derek Fordham

Just another one of those we should have won. We (and I use the royal we) squandered countless opportunities in front of goal. The heat of the day also caught us out a bit, running out of the desire to mark anyone!

There were good saves in goal by Tian, and our system of rotations for our number of players is getting better.

There are signs there that we will improve quickly once we sort out our structure, and of course get fit. Welcome to Troy who is returning to hockey after 15 years.

Womens C Grade Red vs Banks Bluebirds

Won: 11 - 0

Goal Scorers: Ollie a zillion, Shayla a couple, Cassie her first!..and others...

We played a very depleted Banks Bluebirds side. They had 7 players, including a kicking full back (who was their stand out!).

Needless to say Sam (our Goalie) got very few touches. One in fact.

Not a game to judge our season by.

 Steve

Womens B Grade

Womens B Grade 3-3 Draw with Banks

A rusty start to the game with Banks taking an early advantage by scoring two goals early in the game. The team picked up well and began playing effectively as a team after around 15 mins. Short sharp passing led to scoring two quick goals by Stacy Porter. A third goal saw us leading by 3-2.

There was a lot of running and with about 15 mins to go the girls rang out of legs and Banks scored the equalising goal to have the game at 3-3. Tough defence in the last 5 mins ensured that they couldn’t score a 4th to escape with a 3-3 draw. A good effort for the first round of the season.

U16 Lads V Banks

10 young  blokes stood tall for first game for the Waratahs U16 Boys. The team started off very defensively and repelled many of the Banks attacking moves. In the second half the team found a forward in Liam Parker, who through great persistence scored the teams first of many goals for the season. Unfortunately Banks scored a couple more goals than the Tahs team. The lads did not come away with the points however they are on track to build up throughout the season to peak at the right time.
